Decluttering hospital workflows.
For more focus on healthcare.

Intel US • 2013 • Research, Synthesis, Design

Global user research and design of a tablet for hospital workers across different departments.

Intel briefed us (Experientia) to research hospital environments and develop a meaningful solution. Based on extensive user research across 3 continents we developed a solution that facilitates more fluid and intuitive interdepartmental collaboration and streamlines information flows in hospitals. I was responsible for the UX & UI Design.

SD Deliverables guiding design

After extensive contextual research with healthcare workers in four different countries (China, UK, US and Germany) we had vast amounts of data about needs, requirements, mental models, daily practices, preferences etc. We also discussed the findings with the client during participatory design workshops that set the direction for the following design phase.

Using the research insights, we mapped hospital workflows and synthesized personas around key actors that were further enriched through day-in-the-life graphs. At the end, these personas helped us find opportunities and model services that provide value to the entire hospital ecosystem.

Additionally, they also led to a direction for the subsequent design phase in which we developed several consequences and a video prototype.

Increasing communication efficiency

One of the biggest challenges emerging from the research was the severe lack of time due to inefficient communication, insufficient technology and delays between departments. Medical staff is constantly asked or asking for information while having to deal with emergencies, patients, relatives, colleagues, regulation, etc.

Our design addressed these needs through a time-based, contextually adaptive interface enabling staff to keep track of relevant information without being overwhelmed. That way time usually spent finding or attaining information is reduced resulting in more time being available for taking care of patients.
