Designing a reassuring refuelling experience for hydrogen fuel
Design Prototyping
During my time at Designworks we developed an iconic design for a new hydrogen dispenser that is primed to become a flagship on Shell forecourts across Europe. I was responsible for the user journey and digital experience. Using the redesign as an opportunity for improvement, I created a simpler, yet richer experience.
Draft to Design. 2 weeks.
Design Process
Testing a physical & digital experience
To test my designs on the fly, I used screen printouts on a cardboard mockup of the dispenser, which I tested with colleagues. This quick & dirty paper prototyping allowed me to get a better understanding of the context and usage of a hydrogen dispenser and it greatly helped me to improve my design’s usability, for example in terms of accessibility, privacy and placement.
Prototyping for the big screen
For the final presentation, I created a prototype on a portrait 4k touchscreen that would fit into the final physical shape and demonstrates the main features of the design.
Design for emotion, trust, and engagement
Hailed as the fuel of tomorrow, hydrogen still needs to overcome public stigma. To educate about its advantages and to increase acceptance, I tried to integrate three aspects into the design:
Emotion
A friendly and familar visual language helps overcoming the fear of the unknown.
1
Trust
Through feedback and assurance, the design establishes credibility and confidence.
2
Engagement
A clear IA increases usability while strong CTAs trigger curiosity and engagement.
3
Results
We eventually presented the design on a portrait 4k touchscreen running a prototype of the design that demonstrated the main features. Additionally, I created a small mobile prototype that the client audience could ‘take home’.
By now, Shell is rolling out the dispenser, however they have since updated the digital design of it.
